What this index checks that most "best panel" lists do not

Method-labeled irradiance

A solar power meter reads roughly double what a laboratory spectrometer records on the same panel, so every figure here is labeled with the instrument that measured it.

Evidence graded by condition

Skin, hair loss, wound healing, and knee osteoarthritis carry controlled-trial support; weaker claims are graded down, and every clinical claim carries a PMID.

Prices verified monthly

Prices and specs are re-verified on a monthly pass, and fields a brand does not publish are marked as such rather than guessed.

How this index works

Red light therapy panels, in one paragraph

Red light therapy panels are LED arrays emitting red (630-660nm) and near-infrared (810-1064nm) light studied for skin, muscle recovery, joint pain, and more. The panels differ far more than their marketing suggests: irradiance claims measured with solar meters run roughly double true spectrometer values, "7 wavelength" panels can hide 80% of their power in two bands, and return policies range from 60-day free trials to 20% restocking fees and models that cannot be returned at all. This index compiles published specifications for 188 panels across 41 brands and labels every figure with how it was measured, so the differences are checkable rather than taken on faith.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best red light therapy panel?

It depends on the goal, but the panel worth trusting is the one whose specs survive method-checking: irradiance stated with its measurement instrument, per-wavelength density published, and buyer terms without hidden fees. In this index the RLT Home Total Spectrum MAX leads overall, Hooga HG300 leads on budget, and MitoPRO 1500X leads app-connected mid-range. See the full ranking.

Is any red light therapy panel FDA cleared?

No. No rectangular red light panel holds an FDA clearance. The strongest real status for a panel is FDA-registered, which is only a listing, not a clearance. Brands that advertise "FDA cleared" on a panel are usually citing a clearance for a different device, like a mask or hair cap. Full detail on the FDA explainer.

Why are the irradiance numbers here different from the brand sites?

Because a solar power meter reads roughly double what a laboratory spectrometer records on an LED panel. Every irradiance figure in this index is labeled with the instrument that measured it, and independent spectrometer tests routinely land far below the marketed number.

Which wavelengths should a red light panel have?

Red at 630 to 660nm works at the skin; near-infrared at 810 to 850nm reaches muscle and joints, and 1064nm-class light penetrates deepest. A long wavelength list means little if most of the output sits in one or two bands, so check per-wavelength density, not just the numbers printed on the box.

Every figure is compiled from manufacturer publications and attributed third-party measurements, labeled by measurement method, and dated. Health claims are graded against PubMed-cited trials on the evidence pages. See the methodology for how grades and rankings are assigned.
